TOUR 2022 - STAGE 5

On the 5th day of the tour, the Manisa-Ayvalik stage was won by Australian rider Sam Welsford from the Dutch Team DSM.

On the fifth day of the tour organized by the Turkish Cycling Federation under the auspices of the Presidency, the Manisa-Ayvalik stage was left behind.

160 cyclists participated in the 5th stage, which was started in Cumhuriyet Square in front of the Governor's Office, one of the landmarks of Manisa. The track, which passed through Saruhanlı district, took the İzmir-Istanbul Highway and then continued until Kırkağaç toll booths. After leaving the highway, the cyclists passed through Soma and Bergama and finished in Ayvalık after 191.7 kilometers.

Batuhan Ozgur and Elchin Asadov from Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality, Belgian twin brothers Abram and Michiel Stockman from Germany's Saris Rouvy Sauerland team, and German Maurice Ballerstedt from Belgium's Alpecin-Fenix team took part in the escape group formed at the beginning of the race.

While this team continued until the last 8 kilometers, Batuhan and Ballerstedt sprinted to leave the escape group behind. About 3 kilometers from the finish, Batuhan was captured by the peloton while Ballerstedt was left alone. Later, Ballerstedt was caught after 1 kilometer.

Athletes came to the finish en masse, but the huge crash in the last 700 meters made most of the peloton stop. Around 25 athletes who were already ahead of the accident tried to pass the finish in the first place with a great struggle.

After a challenging sprint, Australian Sam Welsford from Team DSM took the first place with a timing of 4 hours 13 minutes 49 seconds. Belgian Jasper Philipsen from Belgium's Alpecin-Fenix team came in second and Arvid de Kleijn from the USA's Human Powered Health team came in third.
